A Reno/Sparks native, Dr. Welmerink joined his father at Welmerink Orthodontics in 2004 as a lab and chairside assistant. Watching patients’ lives improve as their smiles transformed solidified Dr. Welmerink’s decision to enroll in dental school at the University of Washington.
Dr. Welmerink then earned his master’s in orthodontics from the University of Michigan and became certified by the American Board of Orthodontics, a distinction achieved by only one in three orthodontists. For more than 9 years, Dr. Welmerink fulfilled his dream of practicing with his father, Dr. David Welmerink, at Welmerink Orthodontics.
Inspired by his family of teachers, librarians, and principals, Dr. Welmerink treasures education. He volunteers at the University of California, San Francisco, as an associate professor of orthodontics. There he supervises orthodontic residents in the clinic and teaches seminars on treatment planning and orthodontic practice. He also tutors pre-dental and pre-medical students, mentors aspiring dentists, and participates in academic research. In 2010, he chaired a national conference for all orthodontic residents.
Dr. Welmerink invests in his community and the profession of orthodontics. Dr. Welmerink has served as president of the Northern Nevada Dental Society and Director on the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists Board of Trustees. He is a member in good standing of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, the Northern Nevada Dental Society, the Nevada Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He participates as a member of the Northern Nevada Craniofacial Team through the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
Dr. Welmerink enjoys playing basketball and coaching youth teams, hiking, water sports, and soaking in sun at Lake Tahoe. He’s always up for a board game with family and friends. His education-loving wife, Diana, works as an educational counselor for her alma mater and together they have two wonderful children, Claire and Isaac.
