Have an orthodontic emergency?

General and Emergency Ortho FAQs

If you’re experiencing severe pain, a broken appliance that can’t be fixed at home, or any injury involving your orthodontic appliance, it’s best to contact us right away. We’re always here to support you and get you the care you need. Rest assured that orthodontic emergencies are rare, and we’re always available to answer your questions and keep your or your child’s treatment on track.
If a wire comes loose, don’t worry—this happens occasionally. Gently try to push the wire back into place using a cotton swab or a pencil eraser. If it’s too painful or hard to adjust, place a small piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire to prevent irritation and call us to schedule a fix.
If a bracket comes off, hang on to it and bring it with you to the office. In most cases, we can reattach it without any issues. If there’s discomfort, a bit of orthodontic wax can help relieve irritation. We’ll take care of everything when you come in.
Because your teeth are shifting, it’s normal to feel some discomfort after getting braces or adjustments. The pain is usually mild and will subside in a few days. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed. Applying a warm compress to the outside of the mouth can also help soothe any soreness. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if the pain seems severe or doesn’t go away.
Try to carefully move it with a cotton swab or pencil eraser. If that doesn’t work, place some orthodontic wax on the wire to cover the sharp edge. If it’s still bothering you, give us a call, and we’ll get you in to sort it out.
Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or pasta. Avoid hard or sticky foods that could make the issue worse and try not to chew on the side where the wire or bracket is damaged.
Swelling or irritation is common, especially after getting braces, an adjustment, or starting a new set of aligners. A warm saltwater rinse can help reduce swelling and soothe discomfort. We’ll give you orthodontic wax to cover any rough spots that might irritate soft tissues in your mouth. If swelling persists or seems severe, reach out to us, and we’ll guide you through the next steps.
Losing a separator is fairly common and usually not a big deal. Let us know so we can offer guidance for your specific situation. We can replace the separator at your next appointment or sooner if needed.
Absolutely! If your child plays sports, they should wear a mouthguard to protect their braces and teeth from injury. You can purchase a special mouthguard designed for braces. If your child does experience an injury to the mouth, contact us right away. Playing an instrument with braces or aligners may feel weird at first, but the body adapts quickly and your child will be playing normally in no time.
A loose tooth is usually a sign that your child’s teeth are moving, which is a positive step in their treatment! However, if the tooth is very loose and causing discomfort, give us a call. We may suggest adjusting the braces to help manage the tooth’s movement.
Average orthodontic treatment lasts around 18 to 24 months, but everyone’s treatment timeline is different. Some people may need less time, while others may need more. Your unique treatment plan will be tailored to you, and we’ll provide you with a clear idea of what to expect. Don’t worry—we’ll be with you every step of the way to ensure everything goes smoothly!
Most patients feel discomfort, especially after the braces are first put on or after adjustments, as your teeth begin to shift into place. But don’t worry—it’s usually mild and temporary, lasting just a few days. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed, and you’ll quickly get used to the feeling of your braces. It’s all part of the journey to a beautiful smile!

Make sure to brush your teeth at least three times a day, especially after meals, and floss carefully around the brackets. Our team will provide you with tips and reminders to make your treatment as comfortable and effective as possible!
